Peacebuilding and Violence

The majority of the world’s conflicts today are those that have resurfaced from previous conflicts, and those that are recurring even after multiple peace agreements, ceasefires, and long negotiations take place. Now, more than ever, data can be employed as an integral resource that will galvanize these efforts in conflict-ridden areas such as the eastern Congo, Syria, and Ukraine. This theme explores how data can play a role in preventing, mitigating, and bringing to justice this violence.

Some of our ongoing projects and research include predictive modeling for crime spots in London, a peace hackathon in Bogotá to using big data sets to prevent violence, why mapping rebel movements in the eastern Congo will help break its deadly cycle, and using mobile phone data to predict violent acts.

This Empirical Paper was written by Andrey Bogomolov, Bruno Lepri, Jacopo Staiano, Emmanuel Letouzé, Nuria Oliver, Alex ‘Sandy’ Pentland, and Fabio Pianesi, in collaboration with the World Bank Group, BKF, and Telefónica.
