Data-Pop Alliance is seeking a Design Intern. Founded in 2013 by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, MIT Media Lab, and ODI, we are an international nonprofit focused on using data to drive social change. Our work centers on three pillars: diagnosing local issues with data and AI, building data literacy, and transforming societal systems.

The Design Intern will gain hands-on experience in projects related to data, AI, international development, gender, and social equity, supported by a passionate team of professionals.

DPA has partnered with and received funding from organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, UNDP, FAO, UN ESCWA, GIZ (German development agency), the Vodafone Institute, Oxfam México and other key international stakeholders to develop projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Asia. DPA’s projects are managed and carried out by a core team of about 30 people, including Directors, Managers, Officers, Data Scientists, Research Assistants, and Interns.

Dates: 3 months, full-time

Location: Remote 

Scope of Work

The Design Intern will be reporting to the Communications Director and Design Lead, and be supported by the Communications Manager and Officer, and will provide support through the following key responsibilities:

1. Graphic and Editorial Design Support (40%)
  • Assist in the design and layout of editorial documents, such as research papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Support in the creation of original images, illustrations, and infographics for specific projects, including publication covers, social media cards, and event materials (agendas, invitations, posters, brochures).
  • Help implement DPA branding across different projects, including creating visual materials for merchandising and newsletters.
  • Assist in developing visual identity proposals for specific projects under the guidance of senior design staff.

2. Web Design – UX, UI Support (25%)

  • Assist in designing web page templates for various DPA projects.
  • Support in uploading and publishing web content (e.g., blog posts, job openings, new publications) as directed by team members.
  • Contribute to creating mock-ups for project platforms and support the design of the User Interface (UI) for web-based projects, working under the direction of the Graphic and Web Design Manager.

3. Multimedia (25%)

  • Edit videos for DPA or specific projects, including support for co-developing storyboards, editing video and audio and, if applicable, producing animated content with support from Design Lead.
4. General Support (10%)
                                 
      • Participate in team check-ins, design reviews, and project meetings to align with the team’s objectives.

Profile/Qualifications

  • Recent graduate (or student in last semester of university) with a degree in design, communications, or relevant experience in the field. 
  • Intermediate use of Adobe Suite and related programs, such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Canva and Capcut.
  • Experience with design for social media (e.g., diverse image formats).
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Chrome Interfaz). 
  • Experience using WordPress or similar platforms is highly desirable.
  • Strong interest in human rights, gender, social inequality, and more.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. French and/or Spanish are highly desirable. 
  • Video editing skills are considered a plus.
  • Data visualization skills and tools management is considered a plus.
  • Comfortable with remote teams, processes and software (e.g., Slack, Asana)
  • Ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to multitask, while being proactive, detail-oriented, analytical and organized (i.e., ability to organize files by project).

Candidates should be able to work independently, manage their time wisely, and meet deadlines. They should be detail-focused, reliable, professional, and possess strong research, writing, editing, and analysis skills, as well as excellent communication, and interpersonal skills.

Remuneration 

USD $500.00 / month
