Join us in Istanbul for the “Data for Refugees” (D4R) Challenge Workshop on January 21, 2019

We are pleased to announce that the “Data for Refugees” (D4R) Challenge Workshop will take place on January 21st, 2019 at Boğaziçi University, in Istanbul, Turkey. This Workshop will be the culmination of the D4R Challenge launched in December of last year.

For this Challenge, TürkTelkom, the country’s leading telecommunication operator, in collaboration with Boğaziçi University, TÜBİTAK (Turkey’s Scientific and Technological Research Council), the MIT Media Lab, FBK, IOM, UNHCR, UNICEF and Data-Pop Alliance, made available several anonymized datasets of mobile phone users to international research teams to develop projects to analyze and improve the living conditions of Syrian refugees in Turkey.

During the Workshop, participating teams will present the main findings of their projects, which focused on health, education, social integration, unemployment, and safety and security. The winners for each category, selected by an evaluation committee composed of representatives of academic and government institutions, refugee communities and non-profit organizations, will be announced during an Award Ceremony.

This Workshop will also be an opportunity to bring together Turkish and international policy experts, humanitarian and development practitioners, data scientists, members and representative of refugee communities, and anyone interested in discussing ways to leverage data to improve the lives of refugees in Turkey and worldwide.
