In Latin America, the average person spends 3.5 hours a day on social media, feeding algorithms that prioritize instant gratification over thoughtful content. As attention spans shrink, meaningful conversations on key issues shaping our world become increasingly rare. In today’s attention-driven economy, platforms focus on screen time and clicks, not on fostering genuine exchanges. We are drowning in an infodemic.
The information crisis is a threat to critical thinking.
The Book and Movie Clubs organized by Data-Pop Alliance and Eureka offer an innovative and engaging solution to address this crisis.
Through the “Book and Movie Clubs (BMCs)” organized in the Eureka platform, we bring together diverse communities to explore global challenges through literature and movies. These clubs go beyond consuming content—they cultivate dialogue, empathy, and knowledge, empowering participants to reflect on social issues like gender inequality and the role of technology in democracy.
BMCs offer expertly curated content such as books, movies, and documentaries, with a focus on inclusivity, featuring works by women and gender-diverse individuals, Indigenous peoples, and non-white creators. The Clubs facilitate interactive learning through the features listed below. Additionally, users can track, rate, and discuss their own books and movies in the Eureka platform, ensuring continuous personal development and community engagement.
Selection of books, films, and documentaries, highlighting diverse perspectives, with special attention to voices from women, indigenous communities, and other marginalized groups.
Movie-watching sessions, synchronous discussions, and live Q&As with authors or directors, to foster learning, community and connection.
Written and audio summaries, as well as access to a customized reading schedule, and key reminders via Mailing, WhatsApp and/or Google Calendar to keep participants engaged.
Participants create AI-generated images (“Eureka Moments”) capturing their reflections on the content—and personalized reading or watching lists.
Eureka is a new way of interacting with information beyond social media engagement. More specifically, Eureka is a non-profit, ad-free digital platform designed to foster new ways of interacting with information in the digital age. Unlike traditional social media, Eureka prioritizes user privacy by not including ads or exploiting users’ data. The platform’s mission is to encourage prosocial dialogue on pressing global issues through a unique methodology that leverages literature and cinema to promote reflection and transformative dialogue. While this is mainly achieved through the organization of BMCs with key partners, Eureka and DPA have also partnered to host the “Eureka Moment Workshops”. These are condensed versions of the BMCs that provide hands-on experiences to reflect on social issues using technology and AI. More than 120 participants in 5 events have joined this experience.
Eureka employs an edutainment approach, blending education and entertainment to make learning more engaging and impactful. Inspired by Paulo Freire’s idea of education as an act of cognition, this method creates emotional connections and immerses participants in content, fostering deeper understanding and behavioral change.
