DPA Director Emmanuel Letouzé Speaks at Two UNGA 2024 Events to Discuss CLIMB and AI

New York — On September 17 and 23, 2024Emmanuel Letouzé, Director of Data-Pop Alliance (DPA), participated in two events during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79). The discussions focused on the CLIMB Project and the future of AI, alongside prominent experts and key figures in science and technology.

The CLIMB Project Session

The first event, the CLIMB Project session, was hosted by UNGA’s Science Summit and explored innovative approaches to the challenges presented by climate-driven human migration, utilizing advanced data analytics and AI.

Accompanying Emmanuel in the panel were various partners of the CLIMB initiative, including Malmö UniversityParis Lodron University of Salzburg, the Institute Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) at Harvard UniversityIDEMA and IPAR. Letouzé joined other experts, including Sapiens Ndatabaye, Information Management Head, UNHCR; Tuba Bircan, External Expert/Evaluator, European Commission;  Haodong Qi, Principal Investigator, CLIMB Project; Laure Tall, Research Director, IPAR; and Stefan Lang, Vice-Rector, Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg.

The CLIMB Project—short for “Climate-Induced Migration: Big Data and Predictive Analytics”—focuses on understanding and addressing the growing issue of climate-induced migration. As climate change intensifies, with floods, storms, heatwaves, and coastal erosion displacing millions of people globally, the need for predictive, data-driven solutions becomes more urgent than ever. Currently, CLIMB, funded by the Belmont Forum, is pioneering new ways to harness AI and big data to anticipate these movements and improve responses  in Senegal, one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change.

Innovating For Impact Event

On September 23, 2024, Letouzé was also a featured speaker at “Innovating for Impact: Unleashing AI’s Potential to Accelerate Global Transformation“, an invitation-only event hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and co-organized by Data-Pop Alliance, Mila, Club de Madrid, IRCAI, and the Ministero dele Impresse e del Made in Italy during UNGA 2024. This high-profile gathering brought together global leaders to explore how AI can be harnessed to drive sustainable development —particularly in advancing the SDGs—, promote peace and security, and create a better future for all. In addition to Letouzé, featured speakers included Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Tech Envoy; Aminata Touré, Former Prime Minister of Senegal; Danilo Türk, President of Slovenia; and Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Assistant Director General.

As DPA continues to drive innovation at the intersection of data science and global development, Letouzé’s participation in these UNGA events underscores DPA’s commitment to addressing climate-induced migration and broader global challenges. By leveraging AI and data analytics, DPA continues to be at the forefront of developing impactful, data-driven solutions that promote sustainable development and humanitarian action, aligning with the UN’s vision for a more resilient and equitable future.
