Uganda

Overview

Uganda is a landlocked country in the East-Central Africa with over 40 million inhabitants. Having gained independence from the UK in 1962, the country has continued to face violent conflicts (including a civil war). In large part due to the high rate of informal employment (83%) and the weak healthcare system, Uganda is facing various challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic (see Country brief).

GIZ FAIR Forward: AI and Data Governance Policies

The GIZ FAIR Forward Artificial Intelligence initiative aims to promote and achieve a more open, inclusive and sustainable approach to AI at an international level. With partners in Uganda, the FAIR Forward initiative aims to 1) strengthen local technical know-how on AI, 2) to remove entry barriers to AI by improving access to training data and AI technologies for local innovation, and 3) to develop policy frameworks ready for AI including ethical AI, data protection and privacy.

In the framework of this consultancy, Data-Pop Alliance will support GIZ FAIR in the creation of fact-sheets and reports, and will contribute to GIZ partners and events, including virtual working group meetings, events, and study trips, amongst others. In addition to this, DPA will support the creation and implementation of a data governance model in Uganda.
