Research and Training Strategy Intern – Cambridge MA

Data-Pop Alliance is seeking a full-time Trainings Intern based in Cambridge MA (or alternatively New York City).
Effective dates: 2-3 months, starting early June or July – through August 31st.

Reporting to the Director and working closely with the Knowledge Manager based in Cambridge MA, the Research and Training Strategy intern will support Data-Pop Alliance’s Global training program on Big Data and Sustainable Development through the following key responsibilities:

Research for materials update (50%)
  • Research most recent academic discussions and empirical case studies around the use of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for public policy and sustainable development;
  • Research sectorial uses of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, including demographics, crime and conflict, gender and humanitarian action;
  • Update all Data-Pop Alliance training materials about “Big Data for Sustainable Development”, including: adding recent examples and case studies, reviewing/updating ‘technical’ content (in particular ‘Methods and Tools’ component) etc.;
  • Create content for Data-Pop Alliance training materials about Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep learning etc. for public policy and sustainable development;
Prospective research for program strategy (50%)
  • Undertake a needs assessment in terms of data literacy across a selection of countries (tentatively Senegal, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Ghana – tbc);
  • Review existing training and capacity building programmes on data literacy targeting kids and youth;
  • Review existing training and capacity building programmes on AI / Big Data for demographics, crime and conflict, gender and humanitarian action etc.;
  • Support the development of Data-Pop Alliance’s new training program, in close collaboration with the Knowledge Manager and the Fundraising Officer.

Skills and experience required
You are / have:

  • A current student or graduate with a Master’s Degree in Data Science, Technology and Policy, International Development, or relevant field
  • Previous experience in research and/or programme development on data, AI, and sustainable development
  • Working knowledge and experience in data science, big data and/or artificial intelligence
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • A self-starter, disciplined, driven, eager to learn, grow, and make an impact
    Management of Spanish and/or French is a plus

Stipend
$ 800 USD / month
