Marion Dumas

Omidyar Fellow, Santa Fe Institute

Marion Dumas is a social scientist whose research focuses on understanding how various institutions – from legal systems all the way to the economic institutions that promote technological innovations – affect our ability to meet the challenges of sustainable development. She is particularly interested in how societies collect, distribute and discuss information to learn and solve complex problems, which is why she looks forward to doing further research with DataPop Alliance. Starting in September 2015, Marion will be an Omidyar fellow at the Santa Fe Institute and she holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Sustainable Development. She also holds a MS.c from the ETH Zurich in Ecology and a BS.c from MIT in Earth Sciences. This diverse training allows her to navigate both the natural and social sciences.

The Real Promise of Big Data: Seeing Like a State and Like a Citizen

Marion Dumas Feb 17 2016 Blog

This is the second in a series of companion pieces that offer insights from the synthesis report. The authors of the series attempt to go “beyond the buzz” to lay out what we actually know about Big Data’s existing utility for disaster science and for building practical resilience.
