EmpoderaData Workshop: Data Literacy for the Sustainable Development Goals in Latin America

EmpoderaData, from the Spanish word empoderar for “to empower”, builds upon the success of the Q-Step program. Q-Step, for “Quantitative Step-change”, was developed as a strategic response to the shortage of quantitatively-skilled social science graduates in the United Kingdom. The University of Manchester (UoM) is one of 15 centres that took part in a £19.5 million program designed to promote a step-change in quantitative social science training. One of the core pillars of the UoM Q-Step Centre was to train undergraduates to do data analysis by enabling them to practice their data skills in the workplace.

In this free workshop the University of Manchester (UoM) together with Data-Pop Alliance (DPA) will expand upon the project findings, exploring this model in the Global South through the “EmpoderaData Project”. Three pilot countries – Brasil, Colombia and Mexico, were included. The project aims to promote a virtuous cycle of social transformation by fostering data literacy skills applied to addressing our society’s most pressing issues through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
