Data-Pop Alliance is looking for a Content and Research Intern for our Data Feminism Program. We are an international non-profit “think-and-do-tank” created in 2013 by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI), the MIT Media Lab and ODI. We bring together researchers, experts, practitioners, and activists to “Change the world with data” through three pillars of work: diagnosing local realities and human problems with data and AI; mobilizing capacities, communities, and ideas towards more data literate societies, and transforming the systems and processes that underpin our societies and countries. 

DPA has partnered with and received funding from organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, UNDP, FAO, UN ESCWA, GIZ (German development agency), the Vodafone Institute, Oxfam México and other key international stakeholders to develop projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the Middle-East and North Africa (MENA), and Asia. DPA’s projects are managed and carried out by a core team of about 41 people, including Directors, Managers, Officers, Data Scientists, Research Assistants, and Interns.

Dates: 3 months, full-time (possibility for extension and growth within the organization). 

Location: Remote. Preferably within Latin America or the MENA region.

Scope of Work

Reporting to the Program Lead and Project Managers in the “Data Feminism” Program, and working closely with the Communications Manager, the Content and Research Intern will have the opportunity to collaborate on multiple projects with international partner organizations and produce research in the fields of gender equality, gender-based violence, Data4Development, COVID-19, and other human rights topics, as well as generate content for our website. Among others, primary activities for the Content and Research Intern include:

1.Gender Research (65%)
  • Complete research tasks as assigned, such as conducting literature reviews and background research; finding, organizing, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; and preparing memos, briefs, reports, and presentations on a variety of topics, including Gender Equality, ethics, gender-based violence, and broadly, on Data4Development topics related to gender.
  • Support the evaluation, analysis and review of policies, national and international institutional and legal frameworks, including human rights frameworks and strategies from a gender perspective, and identify good practices and shortcomings. Support the assessment of the status of ratification of international treaties related to gender equality and their incorporation to domestic law and to what extent gender has been mainstreamed in national policies and plans.
  • Support for research and content creation of theoretical and technical workshop materials focused on the intersection of gender and data.  
  • Contribute, edit and suggest revisions for ongoing research and project documentation.
  • Participate in brainstorming and development of research proposals for the “Data Feminism” Program.
  • Carry out operational research tasks related to the Data Feminism Program.
2.Support Data Collection (30%)
  • Identify, gather, examine and analyze existing gender-disaggregated data and other databases related to topics that have intersection with gender (e.g. poverty, migration, public health, etc.)  in Latin America, Africa, MENA, and other regions.
  • Support the Project Manager and Officers and collaborate with Government Officials in gathering and analyzing relevant data with the support of the Data Science team.
3.Content Creation (5%)
  • Propose and write content for the blog (i.e. discussion pieces, LinksWeLike) on a periodic basis, with the support of the Communications Manager and Officers.
  • Support in translating project documentation (including reports, articles, and blogs) when/if necessary.

4. Participate in meetings with other DPA researchers.

5. Other tasks and duties as required.


  • Recent graduate (or student in last semester of university) with a degree in Gender, International Relations, International Development,  Political Science or other social science fields. 
  • Strong interest in research at the intersection of international development and gender (data), proven by previous academic projects, volunteer work of professional experience.
  • Previous experience analyzing and reviewing policies (national and international), institutional and legal frameworks, including human rights frameworks, and strategies from a gender perspective to identify good practices and gaps.
  • Familiarity and experience with qualitative and quantitative research and analysis (especially if the candidate has proven knowledge of R and/or Python and/or WordPress will be considered a plus).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in Spanish, Portuguese and/or Arabic is a plus). 
  • Ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Highly proactive, analytical and organized.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and remote productivity tools (Drive, Slack, Zoom, etc.). 
  • Comfortable with remote teams and processes.

Candidates should be able to work independently, manage their time wisely, and meet deadlines. They should be detail-focused, reliable, professional, and possess strong research, writing, editing, and analysis skills, as well as excellent communication, and interpersonal skills.


500 USD/ month
