As part of the ALIGN project’s efforts to generate evidence on violence against women in political life, the report “Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence Against Women in Politics in Brazil” examines how digital tools and platforms are being used to target women active in politics. Produced by Data-Pop Alliance with the ALIGN Platform and funded by ODI Global, the study draws on in-depth interviews, qualitative analysis, and a review of online dynamics to document patterns of abuse and their broader democratic implications.
The report shows how technology-facilitated violence functions as a mechanism of intimidation and exclusion, pushing women to withdraw from political debate, limit their public engagement, or consider leaving politics altogether. By situating these findings within Brazil’s political and digital context, the study highlights both the risks posed to democratic participation and the urgent need for stronger prevention, accountability, and policy responses grounded in evidence.
