Feminist Urban Design: A Gender-Inclusive Framework for Cities

The inception report “Feminist Urban Design: A Gender-Inclusive Framework for Cities,” developed by CHANGE, Data-Pop Alliance, and Open Data Watch, introduces an interdisciplinary approach to making cities safer, more accessible, and inclusive for all genders. Building on feminist urbanism principles, the framework aims to embed gender equity into urban development by addressing the patriarchal structures historically present in public spaces. Rather than making direct comparisons between cities, this project aims to support cities in:

  1. Assessing their own progress across a number of broad outcome areas.
  2. Learning from gender policies and programs in other CHANGE cities.
  3. Strengthening their gender data collection and monitoring processes.

It incorporates a robust, data-driven methodology, integrating both qualitative and quantitative insights, to empower city leaders to assess progress, foster collaboration, and implement meaningful interventions. Anchored by the experiences of five pilot cities—Mexico City, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Nairobi, and Quezon City—the initiative emphasizes participatory engagement, innovative data sources, and tailored strategies to create cities that prioritize inclusivity and social justice.
